A battered metal lunch pail was chosen as a symbol of a no-name, blue-collar defense. Each week a list of goals in put in the lunch pail and a player is chosen to have the honor of carrying the lunch pail onto the sidelines. The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation was founded to fund academic scholarships for students from the area near Blacksburg, Virginia. The Hokies finished the 2016 season 10–4, 6–2 in ACC play to win its sixth ACC Coastal Division title. In the ACC Championship, the Hokies fell to eventual National Champion Clemson. The running backs weren’t used enough, but Travon McMillian leads a nice group that should do more to take the pressure off the quarterback – more on that in a moment – behind a fantastic line. The run D struggled in 2015, too, but if it can get back to the level it was at before that, look out. The defense was good enough to pick up the slack more often than not, but the fumbling problems were a disaster at times. However, this is nothing new – Virginia Tech has fewer than 20 turnovers in a season just once since 2011. The Hokies compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Their home games are played at Lane Stadium, located in Blacksburg, Virginia with a seating capacity of over 65,000 fans. Lane Stadium is considered to be one of the loudest stadiums in the country, being voted number two in ESPN's 2007 "Top 20 Scariest Places to Play". It was also recognized in 2005 by Rivals.com as having the best home-field advantage in the country. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Glennon was set to take over for Vick in the 2006 season.

The loss officially eliminated the Hokies from ACC Coastal Division contention with three regular-season games left to play, making for a long final quarter of the season. But the story of Tech’s 2017 season was one of youth and inexperience from an inconsistent offense, a situation set up by the three early NFL departures.

Taking over for Bryan Randall was Marcus Vick, younger brother of Hokies great Michael Vick. The Hokies started off the season 8–0, including victories over West Virginia and ACC rivals Georgia Tech and Boston College. Going into the tenth week of the season, the Hokies were ranked 3rd in the country behind USC and Texas and would face the 5th ranked Miami Hurricanes at home.
Fans, Alumni, and Blacksburg area are not able to profit at the level they can when Saturday games are held. A big-time program like the one we are trying to evolve and sustain can not afford under-attended home games and lower than normal revenue. No Thursday night games and 3 home games on Saturday beginning Sept 30 through October 28. FWIW, Tech last played Clemson in the regular season in 2012 (@Clemson), not 2011. The first ACC road trip of the season for the Hokies will be Oct. 7 at Boston College.
Best Virginia Tech Offensive Player
The Hokies closed the season against the upstart Louisville Cardinals in the 2006 Gator Bowl. Virginia Tech won 35–24, but the game would become infamous for a play that would contribute to Vick's expulsion from the team. Late in the first half, with the Hokies trailing 17–10, Vick was tackled by Cardinals defensive end Elvis Dumervil. After the play, Vick stomped on Dumervil's leg, apparently out of anger. Four days after the game, Virginia Tech officials learned of two misdemeanor charges of speeding and driving on a suspended or revoked driver's license that Vick received on December 17, 2005. The 2005 season saw many ups and downs, but would end in disappointment.
Though many hoped for recently departed Maryland coach Bobby Ross, athletic director Dutch Baughman turned to Frank Beamer, a Hokie alumnus and defensive back from 1966 to 1968. Beamer had worked his way up the assistant coaching ladder since his 1969 graduation before spending six seasons in the head job at Murray State. Among the assistants Beamer brought with him from the Racers was linebackers coach Bud Foster, who had joined Beamer's first Murray State staff as a graduate assistant immediately upon his own graduation there. Virginia Tech's first post-season bowl appearance was in the 1947 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas against the University of Cincinnati. Three times this game has determined the Coastal Division champions with VT winning in 2007 and 2011, and UVA winning in 2019. Fuente was fired with two regular season games remaining on November 16, 2021 after compiling an overall record of in six seasons. During Beamer's tenure at Virginia Tech, putting points on the scoreboard became a full team effort with the offensive, defensive and special teams units. Often when the team scores one or more non-offensive touchdowns, the style of play is described as "Beamerball". Since Beamer's first season in 1987, a player at every position on the defensive unit has scored at least one touchdown, and 35 different players have scored touchdowns on Virginia Tech's special teams. The Hokies later went on to defeat the Clemson Tigers 41–20 in the 2001 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida.
Some school's results have been altered by retroactive NCAA penalties. As a matter of policy, Sports Reference only reports the results of games as played on the field. Virginia Tech will conclude the 2017 regular season with a Commonwealth Cup clash against Virginia on Friday, Nov. 24. Over the past 18 seasons, Virginia Tech has dominated its in-state FBS rival like no other major program, posting a 17-1 record against the Cavaliers over that span.
